THE OREGON ANGLER

A message from the Oregon Angler,
Todd Hannah about the 2009 fishing season
What a salmon season it was for us here on the Umpqua
River..... 353 Salmon landed in September and October
in my boat alone, over 100 more fish than 2008 season. Our
best day September 11 we landed 22 salmon with a
17 fish day that same week. Vince Biondo landed the big
fish for the season at 36 pounds on September 15, a
41 pounder won the Labor Day salmon derby this year.
On October 25 Sharon Allen landed a 34 pound Chinook,
we had a lot of other nice fish this year in the 30
pound class. I am already excited for next year as there is
a good possibility we may be able to keep some of the wild
Coho that we had to release in past years. The King salmon
run has been on the rise now for a few years so I am not
worried about the returning numbers.( photos next email)
Let's think about winter Steelhead, the first few
have been caught in the Umpqua already with a season of
December through March, you have plenty of time to plan your
trip. In past years I have always seen a good push of fish
in December. January can be a wet cold month but the fish
are in the river. February usually produces both good
fishing and better weather. I have put together a Steelhead
fishing package, 2 days fishing Umpqua Steelhead with me and
3 nights lodging at the River Bank Guest house for a price
of $777.00 for 2 people. Not only is that a lucky number
but what a great price! We will be fishing out of my 22
foot jet boat most of the time, so if the weather is wet we
will have the top up and the heater going. Lunch and snacks
always taste better in the dry comfort of the top and
heater. If water is low and the weather is nice we will use
my 20 foot Koffler drift boat.
I am not going to talk spring Chinook season just
yet...just remember last year over 10,000 adult spring
Chinook and 4,000 jacks went over the Winchester dam.
That's a lot of jacks so April and May 2010 looks good for
adult salmon. Some of you already have your dates reserved
and that's a good thing!
